As we step into this new year, I’d love to share a meaningful tradition that might bring some light and guidance to your faith journey: the practice of receiving a Star Word.

This tradition has its roots in the Moravian Church, one of the oldest Protestant denominations. The Moravians are known for their creativity in worship and their focus on prayer and reflection. During their Epiphany celebrations—the time when we remember the Magi following the star to find Jesus—they would give out star-shaped cards with a word written on each one. These “Star Words” were meant to be a personal guide for the year, helping each person reflect on how God might be working in their lives.

Over time, this tradition has spread far beyond the Moravian Church, and it’s easy to see why. A single word can spark powerful reflections. It might be something like “peace,” “joy,” or “hope,” or even a word that stretches you, like “forgiveness” or “patience.” Whatever word you receive, it’s not about getting it “right” or doing something with it—it’s about letting the word sit with you and seeing where it shows up in your life.

If this sounds intriguing, you can try it out for yourself! Visit www.wordoftheyear.me to receive your own Star Word. Once you have your word, take some time to reflect on it. What does it stir in you? How might it connect with your life or your hopes for the year ahead?

Your Star Word might challenge you, encourage you, or simply remind you of something you need to hear. There’s no pressure—just an invitation to keep your heart open to what God might reveal through it.

I hope you’ll give it a try! This simple practice has a way of surprising you and guiding you in ways you never expected.

Here’s to a year of discovery, reflection, and hope. May your Star Word be a blessing to you, and may it light your path as we journey into 2025.  See you Sunday!

Peace, Pastor Tracy
