Broad Street UMC is participating in the First Church Cohort. If you’d like to be involved or learn more, please contact Jean Langdon, the Laity Champion for the cohort.
The First Church Cohort is comprised of “First” churches or churches that serve as a foundational UMC in their community. Bishop Carter recognizes the significance of our church in this community and seeks to help leaders strengthen the ministry in our specific context. The cohort includes churches that:
    •    Are located in the heart of town
    •    Are in historic areas with a “past heyday”
    •    Are surrounded by potential or ongoing renovation/revitalization
    •    Have been defined by past programs but now realize that what used to work is no longer effective
    •    Have a history of being staff-dependent and now require increased lay leadership development
    •    May be landlocked
    •    Have remained present in a changing community
    •    Have members and leaders who recognize the need for change
    •    Have the potential to be prophetic or influential, partly due to the civic/professional leaders within the congregation
The cohort’s mission is to build community partnerships, recognizing that many potential partners may already be part of our congregation, and to reorient our church with the surrounding community and its needs.
